Surfing in Sri Lanka

After recently coming out of a long civil war Sri Lanka has opened its borders to the world and has shown what a true surfing is all about.

Very safe, very cheap and full of wonderfully friendly and relaxed people, Sri Lanka is a great surfing and holiday destination. Imagine coconut palms lined beaches with pristine sand and clear waters that about with an abundance of marine life making it a truly wonderful place to just surf and relax.

Sri Lanka’s East coast was rated in Surfers magazine as one of the top 10 places in the worlds to surf and one only needs to travel there to see why.

The surf is consistent all year round with swell and offshore winds on the South Western Coast from November to April. The East coast gets the biggest swells during the monsoon which and has waves from April – November and has world class point breaks on offer. Relaxed undeveloped and relatively un-crowded surf can basically be had all year round. Its also a great place to find some romance, have some great meals in beautiful locations and learn to surf with some great consistent beach breaks to be had.

Flights are also cheap to Colombo, especially from the UAE with only a short 4 hrs travel. Road travel can be made via tuk-tuk in local areas or via bus, train or taxi van to the surfing area’s. Travel to the South West is around 3-5 hrs and travel to the Eastern areas 6-8 hrs depending on transport chosen.

Sri Lanka not only offers great surf&food but also an abundance of breathtaking temples, lush forests, massive green valleys and is the home of the largest mammal on the earth, the blue whale.
